WHO ARE WE?

ZWEI is a continuation from the previous event EINS. It is an ongoing collaboration with Wechseln, an organization founded by Arantxa Ciafrino in Madrid, Spain. We have previously worked with GlogauAIR, February, 2020, on EINS and the format is focused on selected artists from Wechseln and Künstler, Künstlerin to co-curate an eclectic combination of ideas, processes and sensations. The project takes on many forms and attempts to adapt to surrounding environments we find ourselves in. This time, we are isolated.

There is a sensation of feeling stagnant in times of a lock down / separation from company during a pandemic and it affects us all in different ways. ZWEI looks to understand this process through curated and commissioned artworks and online archival techniques, using the online space as a genuine gallery, working with the limitations that present themselves when considering an audience from a far.

We chose one artist each, presenting a commission base for the artist to respond to the mechanisms of working with the confines of online interaction, without human presence beyond the device itself. The two artist will respond to the themes that live throughout their environment using the mediums which feel applicable at that time. New work is made, and fresh responses to the pandemic can take newer forms, forming isolation as its curtain call.

Without the presence of others for physical validation we are unfortunately left assuming we are the only ones who are lost. To share the sensations we experience through physical isolation splits the issues in half and allows us to open up the casing of our nightmares and dreams. Seeking, genuine, online validation can take its toll but can we connect when presented with limitations of webcams, design files, video movement and images created. Can we feel when no one is physically there? Can we help others through our ups and downs?

The artists will respond and present their failures, gains, praising and anxious moments that co inside with the stretches of the pandemic structure. We are ZWEI and come to you each year.

The project will be published on the 15th January, 2021 for the opening of Vorspiel, Berlin.
