Summarize your work in one word?

Silent.

What inspires you to continue making work?

I don’t know. It’s not like I make drawings for a living, it’s just something that I’ve always done ever since I was a child. To me it’s more like a sort of escape moment from everyday life, an intimate place where I can just be alone with myself and my thoughts. A kind of meditation, if you want, during which I happen to draw things. It’s a necessary piece in my life that helps me put things into perspective and find balance, in order to be able to be focused on the other things I do in life that matters to me. So I’d say it just comes natural, and I don’t really recall ever feeling the need to be driven by something external to keep on drawing.

Although music plays a big role in the process, so if I were to pick something that helps me making what I consider decent or good enough drawings then I’d pick music.

What are you currently working on at the moment?

I just finished a series of 100 drawings that were related to each other only by the fact that i forced myself to make 100 drawings before the end of 2020 cause I’m lazy when it comes to painting. And now I’m starting a new series of drawing that will be inspired by my interest and fascination for Japan, and by the work of artists such as Toriyama Sekien, Yoshitaka Amano, Toshio Saeki and Keiichi Tanaami among others.

Who inspires you most to push your work further?

Well, people. In everyday life and especially at work I’m always inspired by the people around me in everything that I do: friends, family, mentors and colleagues. Past and present, I always felt like everything that I do is intertwined with the people that I meet and by how much they give and influence me, consciously or not. I feel like I have a lifelong debt with all these people, but it’s a twisted burden that do not weight on me, but simply keeps me going, and happily so on a good day.

Strictly speaking about artistic influence there’s so many artists, living and not, that influenced me and that keeps influencing me: Picasso, Mirò, Tanguy, Ferenc Pinter to say a few names from the past, and then Antwan Horfee, David Salle, Manuele Fior, Hayao Miyazaki..

And then if you want some names from emerging artists that I follow and that inspires me I’d recommend Liao Wen, Kazuhito Kawai, Nic Paranoia, Elena Minyeyevtseva, Momo Gordon and Shingo Tamagawa.

If you could say anything to your former self, regarding your art practice, that would help you progress what would it be?

To never rely solely on talent and to truly understand the importance of struggling in order to achieve something. And to be kind to people. Also to watch “Chuck Close writes note to younger self” on Youtube to understand a bit more about being truly creative, passionate and humble towards what you do.
