IAP 33 ~ Bart Wijsman

Important Artist Bart Wijsman says “Here is my work, it is about Intuition”
— Bart Wijsman

Summarize your work in one word?

Intuition

What inspires you to continue making work?

Photography can be a way of opening up to the world, to allow yourself to be vulnerable and receptive, to trust your intuition. Often when you’re photographing, you don’t think about it, you’re just following the moment. Looking back at the images later, you kind of discover what you were actually doing, what you were preoccupied with. The pictures give testimony to the things you find important or worthwhile, even if you didn’t realize it yet.

What are you currently working on at the moment?

I’m always taking pictures, although often I’m not sure yet where it is going. I like to discover afterwards that a series of images forms a whole.

Who inspires you most to push your work further?

Robby Müller is always in the back of my mind. I continue to be moved by his work. The honesty and modesty of it, the way he just looks at the light. The technical side never gets in the way of just looking at what is there.

Phil Elverum inspires me to trust in a project, however big or small it may seem.

Recently, Robert Frank’s video work really struck me. He’s just fearless.

If you could say anything to your former self, regarding your art practice, that would help you progress what would it be?

Don’t wait until it’s perfect. It never will be. You’ll just change, the world will just change, and you’ll forget what once made it so full of life.
